While assembling this list of my favorite songs, I excluded specialty songs, like holiday songs, comedy songs, Renaissance songs, and Christian songs. I also limited the favorites to one song per musician. That cuts down on overloading certain musicians and allowed the "fun" of choosing the top classic for each musician. You will see fine songs listed way, way, down on the list. That is because they are ALL nice songs!
1 Such is the Mystery - John Dawson Read
John Dawson Read is one of the best kept secrets about music. He just didn't become well known even though his music is terrific. I happened to hear him on an album-playing radio station in the 70's from Pittsburgh (WDVE). He plays the guitar and writes great songs, both with melody and insightful lyrics. Whenever I see a beautiful summer day, I think of this song. He wrote it while he was in his Mother's garden. Cliff Richard covered this song on one of his albums. "Today we'll see the butterfly. We'll smell the grass. We'll feel the sky. Oh, what a day, let noone take this away".
2 Skyline Pigeon (72 Piano Version) - Elton John
Elton John, in my humble opinion, is the best songwriter ever. He once said that he searches for perfect songs, never finds them, but has fun trying. This song gets close to perfection with his God-given ability at writing and performing. It reminds me how I will be flying in the next life when I'm released from this current world. "Let me fly to distant lands over green fields, trees, mountains, flowers, and forest fountains, dreaming of the open, waiting for the day that he can spread his wings and fly away again. Fly towards the dreams you left so very far behind".
3 Better Days - Melissa Manchester
Melissa may be best known for "Midnight Blue". "Better Days" is a wonderful song, written by Melissa Manchester and Carole Bayer Sager, about celebrating overcoming tough moments in the past and looking forward to the future. "It feels as if we've been through it all and back again. Now I know they'll be something more. Better Days on our side. Oh it looks as though we're doing something right".
4 Walk On Water - Neil Diamond
This song is most appropriate when the instrumental is included at the end. Even the 45 rpm single included the instrumental at the end. This song grabs me in so many ways, the instruments, the melody, varying tempos, Neil's deep voice, and the lyrics. It's a classic that you rarely hear on the radio. "She walks on water, ain't it like her, she leads the children, ain't it right, ain't it right, ain't it right, dear Lord ain't it right".
5 How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - Bee Gees
This song was offered to Andy Williams to record but he turned it down. It works best with the Bee Gees performing it anyway. A great song. "How can a loser ever win? Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again. Bah dah dah".
6 Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - Carole King
Carole King is probably the best female songwriter of all time. There are so many songs to pick but this song is a classic. The words and music are great. With Carole's piano and style added to it, the version from the Tapestry album is a remarkable song. "Is this a lasting treasure or just a moment's pleasure".
7 Love is the Answer - England Dan and John Ford Coley
This is a great song written by Todd Rundgren. You can't help but be inspired by listenting to this song. Love truly is the answer. "When you feel afraid, when you've lost your way, when you're all alone, when you're far from home, when you're down and out, when your hope's run out, when you need a friend, when you're near the end, love is the answer".
8 Angel - Sarah McLachlan
Sarah sang a great song, "When Somebody Loved Me" in the "Toy Story 2" movie. I like the "Angel" song more each time I hear it. Beautiful piano, melody, and singing with a message for reaching for relief from darkness. "It's hard at the end of the day. I'll find some peace tonight in the arms of the angel, fly away from here".
9 I'm Scared - Burton Cummings
Burton Cummings was already an accomplished singer, songwriter, and piano player with the Guess Who. Then he released solo albums in the 70's. "Stand Tall" was probably a more well known song than "I'm Scared". The piano, words, and melody of "I'm Scared" are delightful. "Something in the air was oh so rare". Burton said the following before he performed it live: "I think the most rewarding are the one's that are from personal experiences. This is one of those songs".
10 Eyes that See in the Dark - Kenny Rogers
Kenny has had a lot of hits and finds magical songs. This is a beautiful love song he obtained from the Bee Gees. "I'll share your dream. I'll show you love you've never known. We've got eyes that see in the dark and the power of love lives for making you mine. Like the eagle that flies in the sun. I'll be lost in your fire before we are done".
11 Seminole Wind - John Anderson
This song was made for this John and John was made to write it and sing it. Classic song with beautiful strings and singing. It also has great piano at the beginning and the end. "Way down south in the everglades where the black water rolls and the saw grass waves. The eagles fly and the otters play in the land of the Seminole. Blow across the home of the Seminole, the alligators in the dark. The last time I walked in the swamp, I sat up on a cypress stump. I listened close and I heard the ghost of Osceola cry".
12 The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me - Gladys Knight and the Pips
A wonderful tribute song. It was on the radio in the 70's and you never hear it on the radio again. "If anyone should ever write my life story, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory, 'cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me. For every moment that I spent hurting, there was a moment that I spent just loving you".
13 Love Can Build a Bridge - Judds
A great song, both lyrically and musically. It took on even more meaning to me recently when I imagined Jesus telling me the words in this song. "I would swim out to save you in your sea of broken dreams. When all your hopes are sinking, let me show you what love means. Love can build a bridge between your heart and mine. Love and only love".
14 Touch of Pennsylvania - Dave Loggins
Dave's most popular song is probably "Please Come to Boston". My favorite has always been "Touch of Pennsylvania" even before I moved to PA. I think I might have seen what he describes in the song when I drove home to Erie from the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Dave is a great songwriter and other musicians have recorded his songs, including Three Dog Night and Tanya Tucker. "When suddenly before me like a fairy tale story unfolding in the sunlight was a sight my eyes have never known".
15 A little Bit More - Dr. Hook
Dr. Hook can write hooks. This is my favorite which has a catchy melody (hook). "When you think I've loved you all I can, I'm gonna love you a little bit more".
16 For You - John Denver
Though most of John Denver's songs are guitar based, this song is piano based. It is a beautiful song that he wrote for his second wife. It could be sung at a wedding or anytime a spouse is celebrating the other spouse. "Just to live in your laughter, just to sit by your window, and just to offer a prayer each day for you".
17 Years - Barbara Mandrell
Barbara is a great singer and songwriter. Betty saw her perform in Warren Ohio. After the show, Barbara mentioned that she could notice Betty's hair in the audience. This songs is sung so well and reminds me that waiting and hoping can sometimes be a long process. "Faded photographs, the feelings all come back. I still see your face like it was yesterday. Years of hangin' on to dreams already gone, years of wishin' you were here, after all this time, you'd think I wouldn't cry, it's just that I still love you after all these years. I leave the hall light on in case you come back home, funny I've been sayin' that for years".
18 Betcha by Golly Wow - Stylistics
The Stylistics have nice easly listening songs. "You Make Me Feel Brand New" is good though "Betcha by Golly Wow" has a special melody. "There's a spark of magic in your eyes. You're a genie in disguise, full of wonder and surprise, and betcha by golly wow, you're the one that I've been wating for forever".
19 I'm Not Lisa - Jesse Colter
Nice piano and melody with this song and nice singing by Jesse. "She was your morning light, her smile told of no lies".
20 Americana - Moe Bandy
I was privileged to grow up in a small town and this song delightfully captures the charm of a small town. "In my time, I thought I'd seen it all. Children playing hop scotch on the square. I knew I was seeing America all over again. Americana, pictures of a people proud and free. You're still what living means to me. There's something about a small town in the Summer, like a Norman Rockwell picture back in time. I saw so many reasons of why I love this country. You know, some things never really change at all. A stone's throw from the fast lane, America is still safe and sound".
21 Shades of Gray - Monkees
There were so many enjoyable Monkees songs with this one as my favorite. It is one of the few Monkees songs where I hear Peter doing some of the singing. It is well performed. You can still tell black from white if you study on it. "it was easy then to know what was fair, when to keep and when to share, how much to protect your heart, and how much to care"
22 Heart of Gold - Neil Young
One of the first classic songs I heard at a young age (this and "Get Together"). Neil sings it in a special way and plays the haromonica so well. You can't help but sing along. "I wanna live. I wanna give. I've been a minor for a heart of gold".
23 Hey There - Rosemary Clooney
I liked this song the first moment I heard it, with a nice melody and a reminder to keep your eyes open. "Hey there, you with the stars in your eyes, love never made a fool of you, you used to be too wise. Is it all going in one ear and out the other".
24 It Might Be You - Stephen Bishop
A great melody from the 80's and words that describe the beginning of falling in love. "I've been passing time watching trains go by, all of my life. Something's telling me it might be you, all of my life. If I found the place, would I recognize the face. I've been saving love songs and lullabyes and there's so much more noone's ever heard before".
25 Operator - Jim Croce
Pay phones are becoming obsolete but not this song! Jim Croce wrote many great songs but this is my favorite which has great guitar and melody. "I've overcome the blow. I've learned to take it well. I only wish my words could just convince myself that it just wasn't real. But that's not how it feels".
26 Vincent - Don McLean
Don McLean is probably best known for "American Pie". "Vincent" has great melody and lyrics and makes us all appreciate Vincent Van Gogh more. The song, "Killing Me Softly with His Song" was written about seeing Don McLean perform in concert. "They would not listen. They're not listening still. Perhaps they never will".
27 HaveYou Ever Really Loved a Woman? - Bryan Adams
This is a classic song for the melody, words, and guitar (especially the guitar at the beginning and end). I'm still trying to answer the question of the title! "Hear every thought, see every dream".
28 I'm Gonna Love You - Glen Campbell
A wonderful love song by Glen. It was on the radio in the 70's and you never hear it on the radio since then. Nice words and melody with a little scottish background music at times. "I'm gonna love you. I'm gonna take care of you. I'm gonna love you all our lives. You will be needed and your words of wisdom heeded".
29 Silver Springs Live 1997 - Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac had many hits and this is my favorite. Green and blue are my favorite colors. The Rumours studio version is fine though the live 1997 version is very special. "You could be my silver springs, my blue green colors flashing. Can you tell me was it worth it, really I don't want to know. Time cast a spell on you but you won't forget me. You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you".
30 City of New Orleans - Arlo Guthrie
This is a beautiful sing-along song which has even more meaning to me since I have taken a few long trips in a passenger train. "Good Morning America, how are ya? Say don't you know me, I'm your native son. I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans. I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done".
31 Wildfire - Michael Murphy
The full version of this song is best with the wonderful piano at the beginning and ending of the song. Radio stations in the 70's used to cut out the piano. "By the dark of the moon I planted but there came an early snow".
32 Taxi - Harry Chapin
Harry Chapin and Jim Croce are probably the best at writing great stories with melodies. In this song, I had always assumed the soprano solo in the middle was by a female voice though it was actually a male soprano voice. "Taxi" is a classic song about hopes, dreams, and reality. "A smile seemed to come to her slowly. It was a sad smile just the same. There's a wild man wizard, he's hiding in me. She said we must get together but I knew it never would be arranged. It's strange how you never know but we'd both gotten what we asked for such a long long time ago".
33 Against the Wind - Bob Seger
Bob Seger knows how to write songs. This one has nice melody and a nice mix of piano and guitar. We're all moving against the wind at times. "She swore that it never would end. I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then. We were young and strong. We were running against the wind".
34 Handy Man - James Taylor
James Taylor made this a whole new song when he released this cover song in the Summer of 1976. Great guitar and voice in this song. "I fix broken hearts, I know, but I truly can.
35 More Beautiful - Joshua Kadison
This is one of the best love songs ever written by songwriter and pianist Joshua Kadison. "You'll always be beautiful in my eyes".
36 So Bad - Paul McCartney
There are so many McCartney songs to choose from, "My Love", "Band on the Run" (good guitar riff), etc. though the melody is terrific on "So Bad", "so" it is my top choice. "There is a place inside my heart, you mean so much to me. Girl I love. Yes I love you so bad. This is worse than anything I've ever had".
37 If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
A great melody mixed with nice words and instruments. "We've come too far to leave it all behind".
38 We May Never Pass this Way Again - Seals and Crofts
Seals and Crofts have a magical blending with their voices, similar to the Bee Gees. Despite that, it was a long time before they were discovered by a mass audience. This is a beautiful melody with wise words pointing out that some events and chances do not repeat. "Life, so they say, is but a game and they let it slip away. We may never pass this way again. So, I wanna laugh while the laughin' is easy. I wanna cry when it makes it worthwhile".
39 I Want to Know what Love Is - Foreigner
Nice song, performed very dramatically. "Take a little time to think things over, read between the lines, in case I'm needed when I'm older. In my life, there's been heartache and pain. I don't know if I can face it again. I want to know what love is. I want you to show me".
40 I Go Crazy - Paul Davis
A magical song by Paul Davis, on the charts for a long time in the 70's, with a great melody and placement of musical instruments. "Getting over you was slow. When I look in your eyes, I still go crazy".
41 Beach Baby - First Class
A great sing-along song! A lot of parts in this song and well done. This song was before Web Surfin'. "Surfin' was fun, we'd be out in the sun".
42 Faithfully - Journey
A song with nice piano and passionately sung. The lyrics are similar to the theme of the Richard Marx "Right Here Waiting" song. Separation won't stop real love. "I get the joy of rediscovering you".
43 Get Together - Youngbloods
One of the first classic songs I heard at a young age (this and "Heart of Gold"). The instruments and melody are great with a message of reconciliation. "You hold the key to love and fear all in your trembling hand. Just one key unlocks them both, it's there at your command".
44 Two Sparrows in a Hurricane - Tanya Tucker
I am about the same age as Tanya so I grew up with her music. She really knows how to sing a song and make it come alive. This song is so special about determining to work through problems and that all ages have struggles. "She's 15 and he's barely driving a car. She' s got his ring and he's got the keys to her heart. It's just a matter of time, they'll spread their wings and fly. She's 83 and he's barely driving a car. She' s got his ring and he's got the keys to her heart. It's just a matter of time, they'll spread their wings and fly. With a head full of dreams and faith that can move anything. They've heard it's all uphill but all they know is how they feel. The world says they'll never make it but love says they will".
45 He Ain't Heavy, he's my brother - Hollies
This is the kind of song you wished you'd written. Great sing along melody with great words about giving. "While we're on the way to there, why not share".
46 Tie a Yellow Ribbon - Tony Orlando and Dawn
It's a great story when someone is willing to wait for another. That story is captured with a great melody in this song from the 70's. Ever since the song, a yellow ribbon has represented a faith symbol in waiting for others, whether it is the armed forces, missing people, or separated lovers. "If you still want me, tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree. I'm really still in prison and, my love, she holds the key".
47 Love Hurts - Gram Parsons
This song was popular by Nazereth. Gram Parsons wrote the song and I like his version best. Emylou Harris sings nicely with Gram in this song. Love is work but worthwhile. "Love hurts, love scars, love wounds, and marks any heart not tough nor strong enough".
48 Yesterday Once More - Carpenters
The Carpenters were geniuses in creating and arranging songs. Nobody will probably ever top Karen's voice. This song is enjoyable and it's special to hear Karen singing about songs! "They're back again, just like a long lost friend".
49 I Have a Dream - Abba
There are so many great Abba songs with this being a favorite, for there is a "wonder of a fairy tale" and "you can take the future even if you fail" and "I'll cross the stream, I have a dream". Abba used to have children help them sing this song in concert.
50 Querete A Ti - Angela Carrasco
Betty and I were in a Spanish record store in Chicago in October 1980 when this song was playing in the store. I pointed to the album playing, to buy it, because I could not speak Spanish. It is a favorite song for Betty and me since. You can call it "our song". I found out after buying it that Angela Carrasco played in the Spanish version of the "Jesus Christ Superstar" play.
51 Innocent Man - Billy Joel
There are many great Billy Joel songs. I could have easily selected "Just the Way You Are", "Honesty", or the beautiful piano-based "Streetlife Serenader". But "Innocent Man" grabs me musically and lyrically every time I hear it. "Some people stay far away from the door if there's the chance of it opening up".
52 Dog and Butterfly - Heart
Ann Wilson is one of the greatest singers around. This song has nice guitar and melody. I suppose the lyrics could be interpreted different ways. It seems to speak of those who do, try, and dream. "Maybe it's livin' make us give in".
53 Summer Days - Partridge Family
Similar to the Monkees, TV portrayed a musical group that became an actual musical group. This is a fun song with great words and melody. Things are "warmer" just hearing this song. "I remember perfectly, high above all time and space and I remember Summer Days".
54 Still - Commodores
Lionel crafted nice songs with the Commodores with this being a favorite. Despite separation, love "still" abides. "Morning's just a moment away".
55 Clair - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Gilbert is a great song writer and he is the "Uncle Ray" in this song. Clair is fortunate to have him as an uncle. The song starts nicely with whistling and finishes nicely with Clair giggling. "You're more than a child".
56 The Guitar Man - Bread
If Bread wouldn't have been popular in the 70's, it makes you wonder if there would have been less easy listening music after them. I could almost pick my favorite by throwing a dart for they have so many great songs. A few pieces of trivia are that David Gates wrote "Everything I Own" about his Father who passed away and not about a girlfriend. Also, Bread toured undercover at one time and called their band "Toast". "Something keeps him going, miles and miles a day, to find another place to play".
57 Killing Me Softly with His Song - Roberta Flack
This song was written by someone who was inspired while watching Don McLean perform in concert. This was the first single I bought as a teenager (along with "My Love" by Paul McCartney). Roberta's "First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" is a classic but this song is most specail to me by Roberta. It also has a well produced ending. "Singing my life with his words, killing me softly with his song, telling my whole life with his words".
58 Angie - Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones should have done more ballads. It has nice guitar and melody along with passionate singing. "Angie, you're beautiful but ain't it time we said goodbye. Everywhere I look, I see your eyes".
59 Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx
Richard Marx is a talented songwriter and this one is a classic for piano, melody, and words. Similar to Journey's "Faithfully", it reminds us that true love abides through separation. "Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you".
60 Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
This song has unique enjoyable singing and amazing instruments. "Way on down south, London town. Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene. He's got a day time job, he's doing alright".
61 Reach - Gloria Estefan
This is the beautiful theme song from the 1996 Olympics. "Some dreams live on in time forever. Those dreams you want with all your heart. If I could reach higher, just for one moment touch the sky".

A special song by a special musician. "No you don't know the one who dreams of you at night and longs to kiss your lips and longs to hold you tight".

There are many good songs by Barry with this being a favorite about looking back after acomplishment as an inspiration to have patience in the next storm. "We dreamers have our ways of facing rainy days".

Firefall could write nice melodies and this is a great one. "When your hopes are fading and they can't be found. Dreams have left you waiting, friends have let you down. Just remember I love you and it will be alright".
65 To Sir With Love - Lulu
This is a song that grabs your attention at first listen and you never get tired of it. I first heard it in the "To Sir With Love" movie. "How do thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume. The time has come for closing books and long last looks must end, and as I leave, I know that I am leaving my best friend. A friend who taught me right from wrong, and weak from strong, that's a lot to learn".
66 Letter From God - Angela Kaset
Angela Kaset is an excellent singer, songwriter, and piano player. Her songs are more popularly covered by others. Her best known song is probably "Something in Red", popularized by Laurie Morgan. "Letter from God" is my favorite by Angela because it is a well structured enjoyable song and the words take you back to the "Wizard of Oz" story where reality turns in to a dream which then turns in to an inspiration! "I might have been dreaming but I'm still believing"!
67 Lean On Me - Bill Withers
This song is similar to "You've Got a Friend" in which someone stands ready to help another. Great words and melody here sang well by Bill Withers. "Lean on me, when you're not strong. and I'll be your friend. I'll help you carry on".
68 I Haven't Got Time for the Pain - Carly Simon
Carly had so many hits and this is a favorite. Just the title alone is a good principle to live by, make yourself busy enough, and helpful to others, so you don't dwell on the pain in life. Nice strings and bell at the end of the song, if you're not already uplifted by that point in the song! "You showed me how, how to leave myself behind, how to turn down the noise in my mind".
69 That's What Friends Are For - Dionne Warwick and Friends
The "friends" joining Dionne in song are Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. A nice message that friends are there for each other. "I do believe I love you. Keep smiling, keep shining, knowing you can always count on me, for sure, that's what friends are for".
70 The One That You Love - Air Supply
If Bread started easy listening music in the 70's then Air Supply probably started it for the 80's. They know how to write catchy songs and this is my favorite about taking a breather. "Understand the one that you love, loves you in so many ways".
71 This Moment in Time - Engelbert Humperdink
This song was out about the same time as "After the Loving" and I find it a classic love song. "More than a ripple, less than a splash. This moment in time. This right time of day. No matter what comes, I know the sun is gonna shine. Because of you and me they'll be this moment in time".
72 In My Room - Beach Boys
Beach Boys, like the Bee Gees, knew how to write music and arrange voices well. This song has a catchy melody and comforting words where "my room" can be a "peaceful mind"! "There's a world where I can go and tell my secrets to".
73 Pieces of April - Three Dog Night
One of many nice songs written for others by Dave Loggins. Three Dog Night got their name from an Austrailian saying where it is really cold when there are three dogs on a bed at night. "Even when it would rain we would laugh it off. I've got pieces of April. I keep 'em in a memory bouquet. It's a morning in May".
74 Sweetheart on Parade - Judy Collins
This Elton John song was meant for a female to sing and Judy nails it. "If everybody loves me, where are they tonight? All I need is someone I can share it with".
75 Dandelion Wine - Blackmore's Night
Ritchie Blackmore (from Deep Purple) formed this band with his wife, Candice Night. They sing a variety of types of songs. This is my favorite about appreciating the current times with others because the future is unpredictable. "Until the moment you leave, I wish that you would stay".
76 In My Life - Beatles
A lot of songs to choose from the Beatles. I like "In My Life" best followed closely by "Should've Known Better". "There are places I remember all my life. In my life, I've loved them all. There is noone that compares with you".
77 Music Box Dancer - Frank Mills
Frank has written some fine instrumentals with Music Box Dancer being very special. Betty likes it so much, she had my Dad play it on the piano at our wedding.
78 Hello - Lionel Richie
Lionel knows how to write songs. This one describes a dream that many have probably experienced. "Hello, is it me you're looking for? I can see it in your eyes. I can see it in your smile".
79 From This Moment - Shania Twain
This is a great song for weddings. Shania's voice can sound close to Karen Carpenter at times but nobody will replace Karen's voice. "Right beside you is where I belong from this moment on. You and I will never be apart. My dreams came true because of you. You're the reason I believe in love.
80 I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack
This song sounded like it was Dolly Parton singing when I first heard it. I like it more each time I hear it. It reminds me that time is short and we should dance when we can. Excellent words in this song. "Never lose your sense of wander, keep that hunger, never take one single breathe for granted, God forbid love ever leave you empty handed, feel small when you stand beside the ocean, whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, you'll give faith a fighting chance, I hope you dance, never fear those moutains in the distance, never settle for the path of least resistance, livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin', lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin', don't let some helmet heart leave you bitter, when you come close to sellin' out, reconsider, give the heavens above more than just a passing glance, I hope you dance".
81 There's Always Tomorrow - Janet Orenstein
Though this is considered a Christmas song, since it is in the Rudolph musical, I consider it a New Year song. It reminds me there are always dreams unfulfilled through there will be time in the next life. "There's always tomorrow with so much to do and so little time in a day. Tomorrow is not far away".
82 Moon River - Andy Williams
A classic song and meant for Andy Williams to sing. "Oh dreammaker, you heartbreaker, wherever you're going, I'm going your way. We're after that same rainbow's end, my huckleberry friend, moon river and me".
83 Memory - Barbara Streisand
"The Way We Were" and "Evergreen" are classics by Barbara but my favorite is her version of "Memory". It is a great song made even greater with her contribution to it. I was so impressed with this song on the radio in the 80's, I bought the 45 rpm single and gave it to my parents to enjoy. "I remember the time I knew what happiness was. Let the memory live again".
84 You Needed Me - Anne Murray
Anne Murray has a magical voice. Betty and I saw one of her concerts in Erie and I remember wishing she would take off her high heels for they looked uncomfortable, but her singing was comfortable. We all are inspired by being needed, and this song covers the subject well. "You put me high upon a pedestal, so high that I could almost see eternity, you needed me.
85 I Was Born to Love You - Eric Carmen
Betty met Eric often when she worked at a Gray Drug store in Woodmere Ohio in 1982 and 1983. He has had many hits. I like the melody, piano, and words of this song. "I never really understood love. Not until I saw your face and I knew what I'd been missing for all my life. I was born to love you".
86 We're All Alone - Boz Scaggs and Rita Coolidge
Both Boz and Rita released nice versions of this song. Radio stations played a duet that pieced the two songs together. "Close the window, calm the light and it will be alright. Once a story's told, it can't help but grow old. So cast your seasons to the wind and hold me dear".
87 Touch Me in the Morning - Diana Ross
Many pieces to this song and all well done. "Wasn't it me who said that nothing good's gonna last forever. Leave me as you found me, empty like before. Wasn't it yesterday we used to laugh at the wind behind us".
88 Listen to the Music - Doobie Brothers
This song just makes you sing along and puts you in a good mood. Listening to music is a highlight of life and this is good music. ""What the people need is a way to make them smile. You gotta get a message, get it on through. Oh, oh, oh, listen to the music".
89 You Haven't Done Nothin' - Stevie Wonder
There are a lot of songs to pick from Stevie but I love this uptempo song best. You can't help but move to this song. "We are amazed but not amused by all the things you say that you do".
90 One Moment in Time - Whitney Houston
This is the theme song from the 1988 Olympics which can relate to any special moment created by hard work. "Each day I live, I want to be, a day to give the best of me. I'm only one but not alone. My finest day is yet unknown. To taste the sweet, I face the pain. I want one moment in time when I'm more than I thought I could be. When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away. I will feel eternity".
91 Do It Or Die - Atlanta Rhythm Section
This song can help inspire you to try and not give up. Nice melody and instruments. "Even when times get rough, and you've had enough, you still got to try.
92 Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
Perhaps the most insightful lyrics of all time with a nice melody to go with it. "Clouds got in my way. I really don't know clouds at all. Don't give yourself away. I really don't know love at all. Well something's lost but something's gained in living everyday. I really don't know life at all".
93 Tuesday Afternoon - Moody Blues
Moody Blues is known for "Nights in White Satin" though I like this song, which I'll think about some Tuesday afternoons. "I'm just beginning to see, now I'm on my way. Those gentle voices I hear explain it all with a sigh".
94 Believe in Me - Dan Fogelberg
Dan wrote many great songs and this one is my favorite. His song, "Longer" was on the radio when Betty and I met. "Trust isn't something that's spoken. And Love's never wrong when it's real".
95 Rhythm of the Falling Rain - Cascades
This is one of the first singles Betty bought as a child. You can really feel the rain in this song. A nice song that is well sung. "Little does she know that when she left that day, along with her she took my heart. Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow".
96 Loving and Free - Kiki Dee
Kiki Dee is probably best known for her "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Elton John. She is a good songwriter and singer and she wrote this favorite. "I will untangle myself so that I can see. Everything will be loving and free".
97 I Saw a Man and He Danced with His Wife - Cher
There is something special about this song but I can't quite put my finger on it. When it was on the radio, I remember there were people hoping it meant that Cher may reconcile with Sonny. "Then he kissed me and he told me I left her 'cause I love you so much more than I knew".
98 She Believes in Me - Steve Gibb
Though Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees has a son Steve Gibb, this Steve Gibb is not related to the Bee Gees. I like this version of "She Believes in Me" better than Kenny Roger's version because Steve Gibb wrote the song and it is more piano based. "She believes in me. I'll never know just what she sees in me. She has faith in me so I go on trying faithfully. I see my old piano in the night just waiting for me like a secret friend. God, her love is true".
99 An Unexpected Song - Bernadette Peters
An interesting song by a talented singer. "For once I'm lost for words. Your smile has really thrown me. Whatever made you choose me. You look at me as though you couldn't bear to lose me. Like an unexpected song that only we are hearing".
100 Time Passages - Al Stewart
Al had a big hit with "Year of the Cat" which is an excellent song. "Time Passages" is my favorite. It has a nice sax solo in it too. "I felt the beat of my mind go drifting into time passages. I know you're in there. You're just out of sight. Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight".
I have many favorite songs from the fantastic 70's decade!
101 Do That to Me One More Time - Captain & Tennille
Toni Tennille sang background vocals for some Elton John songs. When she joined with keyboardist Darell Dragon (Captain), there were many hits. This one has a nice melody with passionate lyrics and great instruments from the Captain. "Once just isn't enough for my heart to hear. Tell it to me one more time. Say those words again like you just did".
102 Baby I Love Your Way - Peter Frampton
The live version of this song from the "Frampton Comes Alive" album is magical. "Want to be with you night and day. With the help of some fireflies. I can see them under the pines. I can see the sunset in your eyes".
103 More than Words - Extreme
I didn't realize this was a duet when I first heard it. Some voices can blend as one, like Abba and the Bee Gees. This song has a message about actions speaking better than words at times. "If you only knew how easy it would be to show me how you feel. More than words is all you have to do to make it real then you wouldn't have to say that you love me because I'd already know".
104 Chopin Nocturne Op 9 No 2 - Arthur Rubinstein
I don't know much about classical music. I do know that I like piano music and the special music of Chopin. I've loved this Chopin piece since the very first time I heard it. I appreciate this piece even more since I found the Arthur Rubinstein piece at youtube.com and it shows the notes on sheet music as you watch it. Rachmanioff also played this piano piece. My Dad calls him "Rocky"!
105 Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head - BJ Thomas
Nice songs and great words about positive thinking. "The blues they sent to greet me won't defeat me. It won't be long 'til happiness steps up to greet me. I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin' because I'm free, nothin's worryin' me".
106 Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland
Even if there was no "Wizard of Oz" movie, this would be a great song, with young Judy the top choice to sing it. "There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullabye. Birds fly over the rainbow, why then, oh why can't I".
107 Somewhere Out There - Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram
The music and words in this song makes you feel the sky. "Someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight. When the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby, it helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky".
108 The Morning After - Maureen McGovern
This is a great song of faith and hope that started in the "Poiseidon Adventure" movie. It can apply to any situation that requires waiting, including waiting unitl the next life. With Jesus as Savior, there is a morning after, the same way a caterpillar changes to a butterfly! "We have a chance to find the sunshine. Let's keep on looking for the light. Oh, can't you see the morning after. It's waiting right outside the storm. There's got to be a morning after, we're moving closer to the shore".

One of the most emotional songs I've heard and a reminder that the grass only looks greener on the other side. "I've been to paradise but I've never been to me".
111 Give a Little - Nicolette Larson
Nicolette was more known for "It's Gonna Take A Lot of Love" though I liked "Give a Little" when it was on the radio and then rarely played on the radio after its release. This song, and "Do It Or Die" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section remind you that you need to take risks at times. "Give a little, care a lot".

A nice melody by Lobo. "Something in my soul just cried. I see the want in your blue eyes".

114 You Light Up My Life - Debbie Boone
This song was played a lot on the radio in the 70's. While most people thought it was about lovers, Debbie was very emotional when she recorded it because she sang it to God. "Alone in the dark but now you've come along and you light up my life, you give me hope to carry on. You light up my days and fill my nights with song"..
115 Watching the Wheels - John Lennon
A song from John's last album that reminds me to stop, take a breather, and smell the roses. "Surely you're not happy now. You no longer play the game. I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round. I just had to let it go.
116 Long Long Time - Linda Ronstadt

121 True Love - Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly
I first heard this song on a "music of your life" radio station and loved it. Great melody and words yet they sing it in an inspired way. Elton John and Kidi Dee sang the same song well but Bing and Grace sang it special. "For you and I have a guardian angel on high with nothing to do but to give to you and to give to me lover forever true".
122 Look What You've Done to Me - Boz Scaggs
Boz can write music. His most well known song is probably "We're All Alone". He wrote this song late in his career and it is my favorite. "Hope they never end this song. Love, look what you've done to me, never thought I'd fall again so easily".

America had many good songs. Tin Man is my favorite about realizing you are already equipped if you have faith. "Oz never did give nothin' to the Tin Man that he didn't already have".
124 The Load Out / Stay Live 1978 - Jackson Browne
"The Load Out" has nice piano and is performed so well live. It just has to be followed by "Stay". "Let the roadies take the stage, the first to come and last to leave. Til' those lights come up and we hear that crowd and we remember why we came. We've got time to think of the ones we love while the miles roll away. 126 Dust in the Wind - Kansas
When I first heard this song, I liked the melody but I didn't want to be reminded that our bodies die and return to dust. However, after asking Jesus as Savior, I have the peace of knowing I will have a resurrected body in the next life, just like moving from a caterpillar to butterfly. "All your money won't another minute buy."
127 I Can't Help Falling in Love with You - Elvis Presley
Well sung by Elvis. "Wise Men say, only fools rush in, but I can't help falling in love with you. Some things are meant to be".
128 Time After Time - Cindy Lauper
This is one of Cindy's early hits and still my favorite. The instruments at the begiining feels like you're going through a time machine. "Then you say go slow, I fall behind, the second hand unwinds. If you're lost, you can look and you will find me, time after time".
129 The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Celine Dion
Roberta Flack's version is very good and this is a nice close imitation of Roberta's version. "I felt the sun rose in your eyes. I felt the earth move through my hands. I felt your heart so close to mine".
130 It's Such a Pretty World Today - Wynn Stewart
This is probably the first favorite song that I heard. I was quite young and heard it on the car radio as my Mom was listening to country songs at the time. It is a beautiful positive minded song. Nice piano and insightful words. "It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance. It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance. It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live. Just remember in the Winter far beneath the bitter snow lies the seed that with the sun's love in the Spring becomes the rose".
134 Don't Stop Believin' - Olivia Newton John
Olivia released many good songs though I like the melody and words of this song best. "On those days when nobody wants to know you, don't stop believin' you'll get by, bad days will hurry by".
135 Everything is Beautiful - Ray Stevens
Ray proved he was a musician and not just a comedian with songs like this one. The glass is half full and there is beauty everywhere. "There is none so blind as he who will not see. We must not close our minds. We must let our thoughts be free. For every hour that passes by, you know the world gets alittle bit older. It time to realize that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder".

Ronnie is a gifted songwriter with this one as a favorite. Nice piano, words, and melody in this song. "You came to me, it was almost like a song".
137 The Logical Song - Supertramp
This song was released just before I graduated from college in 1979. How logical to hear a logical song after studying math! This song does remind you to be careful of what thoughts are influenced upon you by others. "To teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical, where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical. The questions run too deep for such a simple man, please tell me who I am. Won't you sign up your name to be acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable".
138 Have You Ever Seen the Rain - Cledence Clearwater Revival (CCR)
CCR had so many hits. Many of them were number 2 hits but they never had a number 1 hit. Nice guitar in this song and nice melody. "Someone told me long ago, there's a calm before the storm, I know, it's been comin' for some time. I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain comin' down a sunny day".
139 Layla - Derek and the Dominos
It may be a long track (7:27) but I like the song, especially the instrumental ending. The song is just 3:20 in length without the instruments (piano, guitar, bird sound) at the end. "Like a fool I fell in love with you. You turned my whole world upside down".
140 I'll Be There - Jackson Five
This song sounds so sincere from a child with a message of being there, similar to the message in the "You've Got a Friend" song. "We must bring salvation back. Where there is love, I'll be there. Just look over your shoulder".

144 Sacrifice - Sinead O'Connor
Elton John performed this song well though I like Sinead's version best. I saw an Elton John concert in Pittsburgh in 1989 hoping that he would perform the song from the new album at the time. He performed the song and someone sitting near me liked it and hadn't heard it before. A few months later, the song was a single on the radio. "Sensitivity builds a prison in the final act. Some things look better, baby, just passing through. It's no sacrifice, just a simple word. It's no sacrifce at all".
145 Till There Was You - Kristin Chenoweth

Paul is a well long standing and well accomplished singer and songwriter with this being my favorite. "You didn't have to say a word, I saw it in your eyes. I'm not to proud to say out loud, I'm happier, I cried. And I don't want to run your life. I just want to share a space. I just want to be the one to put a smile upon your face. I'm happier to find that both of us could grow".
148 Joanne - Mike Nesmith and the First National Band
Mike Nesmith is a fine song writer. He wrote some nice music with the Monkees. This song has a nice melody with a country yodeling feel to it. "She touched me for a moment with a look that spoke to me of her sweet love. Her name was Joanne and she lived in a meadow by a pond".
149 The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Tokens
Probably one of the best sing-along songs ever! "Wee um um buway! A wimoweh! The lions sleeps tonight".

This can refer to light after a storm or the brainstorm of a new idea, performed well by Johnny Nash. "Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. Look all around, there's nothing but blue skys".
153 The Victor - E Muzeki

156 Under the Boardwalk - Drifters
Besides this being a song I can't help to sing along on the "under the boardwalk" lines, it is well performed by the Drifters. "Your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fire proof. You can almost taste the hot dogs and french fries they sell".
157 Smile - Nat King Cole
"Smile" was written by Charlie Chaplin. I like Nat King Cole's version of it. It has nice words. It is tough to smile through storms yet there is always something to smile about. 158 Misty Blue - Dorothy Moore
A nice song sung very well. "Just the thought of you turns my whole world misty blue".

163 Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon

164 Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel

176 Mountain Dew - Grandpa Jones
I saw Grandpa Jones and Connie Smith live in the 60's at the Monroe County Fair in Woodsfield Ohio and got their autographs after the show. I don't think I've seen a more enthusiastic performer than Grandpa Jones. He doesn't tap his toes or foot while performing. He taps his whole leg! He started too young to be a Grandpa and then grew in to the part! It is great to hear his voice and his banjo. This song also reminds me of the soft drink of Mountain Dew which is Betty and my favorite beverage. It is yellow liquid hidden in a green container! "They call it that old Mountain Dew and them that refuse it are few. I'll shut up my mug if you fill up my jug with some good old Mountain Dew".

What a voice Lou has. This song can refer to a special person but it can also refer Jesus as the hero. "You were content to let me shine. Why you even walked a few steps behind. I was the one with all the glory while you were the one behind me with all that strength. I want you to know that I know the truth. I would be nothing without you".
180 Good Friend - Mary MacGregor
Mary is probably best known for "Torn Between Two Lovers". "Good Friend" from the late 70's is my favorite and reminds me that she is a good singer. "Don't you bet me. I just know that if you let me. I'll show you that I could be your good friend".

194 Estoy Loco - Josh Cruze and the Bandidos de Amor
This is a song from a movie called "Paulie". The movie has an emotional ending and I thought I was hiding my emotions pretty good until, at the end of the movie, Betty handed me a tissue! "When I saw you this evening, my heart fell in love. I am crazy for you whom I love".
195 One in a Million You - Larry Graham
A well sung song. "The skies were blue and oh what a revelation to see. Someone was saying 'I love you' to me. A one in a million chance of a lifetime. For to love you, to me, is to live".
196 My Valentine - Martina McBride
A nice song produced by Jim Brickman. "If there were no words and no way to speak, I would still hear you. You would still have my heart until the end of time. You're all I need, my love, my valentine".
197 Cool Change - Little River Band
A "cool" song by a humble "little" band. "If there's one thing in my life that's missing, it's the time that I spend alone, sailing on the cool and bright clear water. Now that my life is so prearranged, I know that It's time for a cool change".
198 Two Out of Three Ain't Bad - Meat Loaf
A song sung with a lot of passion. The piano at the beginning is very similar to the beginning of Carly Simon's "The Right Thing" song. "The snow is really piling up outside. I'm tired of words and I'm too horse to shout. I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks. But there ain't no truth revealed hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box".
199 You'll Never Walk Alone - Gerry and the Pacemakers
Jerry Lewis sings this song in his telethon. Gerry and the Pacemakers sings this classic song about hope very well. "At the end of a storm, there's a golden sky and the sweet silver song of lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown, walk on, with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone".
200 We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard
Cliff has had a lot of hits, especially in Britain. This one has nice words and melody. "I used to think that life was sweet, used to think we were so complete. It's so funny how we don't talk anymore".
This is your brain on music!
201 What a Feeling - Irene Cara
"Fame" by Irene Cara is a nice song about flying and living forever yet "What a Feeling" is my favorite. "All alone, I have cried silent tears of pride in a world made of steel, made of stone. Take your passion and make it happen. You can dance right through your life. What a feeling".
202 There's a Place for Us - Hayley Westenra
A great song from the West Side Story play. It can refer to savoring time later with people, and time later in Heaven. "Peace and quiet and open air wait for us somewhere. Time together with time to spare, time to learn somewhere. Hold my hand and we're half way there, hold my hand and I'll take you".
203 Still the One - Orleans
A nice sing-along tribute song to a spouse. "You're still the one I want whispering in my ear. Still the one that makes me laugh, still the one that's my better half, still the one that makes me strong, still the one I want to take along".
204 Leaving on a Jet Plane - Peter, Paul, and Mary
A popular cover of a John Denver song. John was going to title it something like "I Hate to Go" but someone talked him in to titling it with the Jet Plane words. "I hate to wake you up to say goodbye. Already I'm so lonesome I could cry. Every place I go, I think of you. Hold me like you'll never let me go".
205 All Time High - Rita Coolidge
Rita has a great voice and multiple hits. This is my favorite. "We're two of kind. We move as one. We're an all time high. Hold on tight, let the flight begin.
206 Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy Clark
My Dad noticed what an accomplished guitar player Roy is, especially with the "Malaguena" song. Roy wrote the "Yesterday" song and it reminds you to be careful of selfishness. "I feel so old before my time. Yesterday, when I was young, I teased at life as if it was a foolish game. Only now I see how the years ran away. I never stopped to think what life was all about. I used my magic age as if it were a wand and never saw the waste and emptiness beyond".
207 Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren
Nice piano and melody from this song from the 70's. "I've thought about us for a long long time. Seeing you or seeing anything as much as I do you. I take for granted that you're always there".
208 99 - Toto
Toto is probably best known for "Africa" though I like the melody and keyboards of "99" best. Could this be about agent 99 from the "Get Smart" TV show? "I've been waiting so long. Oh 99 I love you".
209 Don't Cry Joni - Conway Twitty and Joni Lee
A nice melody with sad lyrics, though it teaches you not to wait for what is important. "I'll grow up someday, you'll see. Tear drops fell like rain that day. Things weren't like they were before. Jimmie, I married your best friend John".
210 Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
More than once I have seen an answer to prayer and then heard this song on the radio soon after that! That makes this song special just for that! "She says we got to hold on to what we got. It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not. We got each other and that's alot. For love, we'll give it a shot. Oh, we're half way there, oh, living on a prayer".
211 Hungry Heart - Bruce Springsteen
The bells in this song make it sound a little like a Christmas song. "Like a river that don't know where it's flown, I took a wrong turn and I just kept goin'. Everybody needs a place to rest".
212 My Sweet Lady - Cliff DeYoung
A reminder to communicate with your lady. "Do the tears belong to me. I'm as close as I can be and I swear to you our time has just begun. I wish you could know how much I love you".
213 Kiss Is On My List - Hall and Oates
Hall and Oates had a lot of hits with this being a favorite. It was on the radio the same year that Betty and I were engaged (1981). When I first heard it, I thought it was "kiss is on my lips". "Because your kiss is on my list, your kiss I can't resist, because your kiss is what I miss when I turn out the light".
214 Come Monday - Jimmy Buffett
Another good melody from the 70's. "I got my hushpuppies on. I guess I never was meant for glitter rock and roll. Come Monday. It will be alright, I'll be holding you tight".
215 Hallelujah - John Cale
A nice song that many of us first heard in the original Shrek movie. "But you don't really care for music, do you? I've walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew you".
216 Mr. Bojangles - Jim Stafford
They say there can be a fine line between comedy and drama. Comedian Jim Stafford does an excellent job dramatizing this Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song. It makes you really listen to the lyrics. "You ever meet somebody as soon as you see them you know they're gonna touch your life? He let go a laugh and then he shook back his clothes all around. He'd jumped so high and then he'd just lightly touch down. There was a time, new suits and dancing shoes, one day we'd be here, and next day we may be anywhere".
217 The Gift - Susan Ashton and Collin Raye
A beautiful song produced by Jim Brickman. "All I want is to hold you forever. All I need is you more everyday. You saved my heart from being broken apart. You gave your love away and I'm thankful everyday for the gift".
218 I Remember Finding Out About You - Badfinger
When I first heard the beginning of this song, it sounded like Andy Williams. We all have a story about first finding out about someone special. "I give my love to you".
219 I Shot the Sheriff - Eric Clapton
A little different and comical, yet an enjoyable song. "I shot the sheriff but I did not shoot no deputy. I swear it was in self defense. Every time that I'd plant a seed, he'd say kill it before it grows".
220 Don't Leave Me this Way - Thelma Houston
Nice melody and sung well. "You started this fire down in my soul now can't you see it's burnin' out of control".
221 I Was Made for Loving You - Kiss
A catchy Kiss song from the 80's. The beginning of it sounds a little like Foreigner's "Hot Blooded". "I wanna lay it at your feet. Cause Girl I was made for you. Girl, you were made for me".
222 Anyone Who Had a Heart - Cilla Black
This is Cilla's first number 1 song (1964) and still the biggest selling single by a British female singer. "Anyone who ever loved could look at me and know that I love you. Anyone who had a heart whould take me in his arms and love me too".
223 Valotte - Julian Lennon
When I first heard this song, I thought it was by John Lennon. His son Julian sounds a lot like him. "How can I explain the meaning of my love".
224 The Sound of Music - Julie Andrews
"The hills are alive with the sound of music" and so is Julie's voice! On the "Do Re Mi" song, It thought the one line was "Ti, a drink with German bread" for years until I finally heard it right as "Ti, a drink with jam and bread". "My heart wants to sing every song it hears. My heart will be blessed with the sound of music and I'll sing once more".
225 Crazy - Patsy Cline
Patsy has a voice that grabs you. "Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you. I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying, and I'm crazy for loving you".
226 Rush Rush - Paula Abdul
A well structured song and melody. "You're the whisper of a Summer breeze. You're the kiss that puts my soul at ease".
227 Teardrops on my Guitar - Taylor Swift
It is refreshing to hear youngsters that are still interested in writing music. Taylor Swift appears to have a lot of potential. "I fake a smile so he won't see. She's got everything that I have to live without. I wonder if he knows he's all I think about at night. The kind of flawless I wish I could be. Look in those beautiful eyes and know she's lucky".
228 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
It's tough to describe this appealing song. Perhaps it makes you too comfortably numb to comment! "There is no pain you are receding. You're lips move but I can't hear what you're saying. I can't explain. You would not understand. This is not how I am. I have become comfortable numb".
229 Backstabbers - O'Jays
Nicely produced song. "What they do! They're smiling in your face. All the time, they want to take your place".
230 Ring My Bell - Anita Ward
A catchy melody along with nices bells in the music. "The night is young. Come on and let yourself be free. Tonight was made for me and you. You can ring my bell".
231 Hot N Cold - Katy Perry
Katy seems wild but there is a talent with her music. "You change your mind like a girl changes clothes. I should know that you're not gonna change. We've got a case of love bipolar".
232 Slow Hand - Pointer Sisters
The Pointer Sisters know how to sing some passionate songs. "It's not a fast move but a slow groove on my mind. I found somebody who will understand".
233 Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
A catchy song. "Black Velvet in that little boy smile, with that slow southern style, if you please".
234 Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
When any musician asks for requests, this is probably one of the songs most requested, even though it is a long song. It has an intoxicating melody. Of course, you can't buy Heaven because it is free for the asking! "When she gets there, she knows, if the stores are all closed, with a word she can get what she came for, and she's buying a stairway to Heaven".
235 Falling - LeBlanc and Carr
I always liked this song from the 70's. I was able to see Lenny LeBlanc perform in Erie in the 90's as a Christian artist though he sang this song in concert to remind us of his past. "Oh I just wanted to say, won't you please stay for I'm falling in love with you".
236 Everytime You Go Away - Paul Young
This song is repetitive but still ejoyable, for the melody and the piano. It reminds us that we all leave pieces of ourselves with others. "Everytime you go away, you take a piece of me with you".
237 Jungle Love - Steve Miller Band
A nice uptempo song. "Jungle love, it's driving me mad, it's making me crazy".
238 Lady - Styx
Interesting instruments in this song. "You gave all the love that I needed. You're my lady. Love shines in your eyes".
239 Sentimental Lady - Bob Welch
Bob Welch has had various musical experiences including time with Fleetwood Mac. "Sentimental gentle wind blowing through my life again, sentimental lady".
240 Salty Dog - Dillards
The Dillards performed on the Andy Griffith Show on TV as the "Darlings". Maggie Peterson is the famale vocalist. The best tasting hot dogs are at the Aldi's store so I sing this song as "let me be your Aldi dog"! "Sat on the corner with the low down blues, a great big hole at the bottom of my shoe. Let me be your salty dog or I won't be your gal at all".
241 Mellow Yellow - Donovan
An interesting song from the 60's which reminds me of the Mellow Yello soft drink, that is not at very many places to enjoy. It also reminds me of our mellow yellow cat, called Summer Day. "They call me Mellow Yellow".
242 Friends and Lovers - Gloria Loring and Carl Anderson
Well sung song. "What would you think if I told you, I always wanted to hold you. A love for each other will guide us".
243 Honey - Bobby Goldsboro
A sad yet inspiring song to notice the current moments. "Honey, I miss you and I'm being good and I'd love to be with you if only I could".
244 Blowin' in the Wind - Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan has always seemed rough around the edges but that probably helped him create his unique writings. "Blowin' in the Wind" is a pure classic, with insightful words full of rhetorical questions. Why do people ask rhetorical quesitons? Don't answer that!. "How many years can some people exist before they're allowed to be free. How many times must a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn't see".
245 But Not For Me - Doris Day
A classic song by Doris Day. This is also one of the few versions that has the intro lyrics. "They're writing songs of love but not for me. I can't dismiss the memory of his kiss".
246 Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat - DeFranco Family
A lot of energy in Tony DeFranco. "A heartbeat, it's a lovebeat, and when we meet, it's a good sensation".
247 I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash wrote many nice songs and had a great cover version of "You'll Never Walk Alone". For something important, you will walk the line. "I find it very very easy to be true. I keep you on my mind both day and night. Because you're mine, I walk the line".
248 The Ballad of Jed Clampett - Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs
It is nice to hear Lester's guitar and Earl's banjo. Although this song has been heard countless times because of the Beverly Hillbillies TV show, it is still enjoyable to hear. "They loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly. Have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality".
249 A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
A nice song starting with organ and then a nice melody. "The crowd called out for more. There is no reason when the truth is plain to see.
250 Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
I saw this group in concert in 1982 in Akron Ohio as they opened for Elton John. They had an instant camera and threw the pictures they took of the crowd out to the crowd. "In my wildest dreams I never thought I'd go but it's time to let you know, I'm gonna harden my heart".
251 We Are Family - Sister Sledge
A good song on its own but it adds even more meaning since Willie Stargell adopted it as the theme song for the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. That year, the Pirates won the World Series and Willie was awarded most valuable player. "We flock just like birds of a feather. We're giving love in a family dose. We don't get depressed, here's what we call our golden rule, have faith in you and the things you do".
252 Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
A memorable melody that is always welcome. Who can't resist singing along to the "sha la la, bit by bit" lines. "Do you remember when, we used to sing sha la la, bit by bit".
253 Turning the Beat Around - Vickie Sue Robinson
This is the original, and my favorite, version of this song. It sounds better than Gloria Estefan's later version, to me. "When you hear the scratch of the guitar scratching then you know that rhythm carries all the action. Move your feet when you feel the beat.
254 Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Steely Dan
An interesting song from the 70's that feels simple yet intricate at the same time. Back then, there was just the occasional communication by phone, not the constant contact with cell phones and Internet. "And you could have a change of heart. Rikki don't lose that number, you might use it if you feel better when you get home".
255 We are the Champions - Queen
This song comes to mind whenever a team wins a championship. "We are the champions, my friend, and we'll keep on fighting 'til the end. It's been no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise. I consider it a challenge before all human race and I ain't gonna lose".
256 Hotel California - Eagles
Whevever I'm stuck somewhere, I'll call it the Hotel California. This song has one of the most popular guitar riffs (this one and "Smoke on the Water"). A little trivia is that this group refers to themselves as "Eagles" and not "The Eagles". "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave".
257 High Hopes - Frank Sinatra
A song that reminds me that determination can matter more than size. "Whoops there goes another rubber tree plant".
258 The Man in Love with You - George Strait
A nice song about not being perfect but caring. "I'm not the key that opens every door".
259 It's Judy's Turn to Cry - Leslie Gore
Her most popular song is probably "It's My Party". She puts a lot of energy and talent in her songs. "Then my tears just fell like raindrops for Judy's smile was so mean. But now it's Judy's turn to cry".
260 Ebony and Ivory - Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
This song speaks about uniting races but it also speaks about uniting any contrasts in life. "Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony, side by side on my piano keybaord. Oh Lord, why don't we. We all know that people are the same wherever you go".
261 Downtown - Petula Clark
Petula Clark can make you see the bright lights of downtown in this song. "When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurries seems to help, I know, downtown. You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares".
262 Borderline - Madonna
I like this Madonna song for melody and the nice instruments. "you just keep on pushin' my love over the borderline".
263 These Eyes - Guess Who
Who is the artist? Guess who. I don't want to guess! Who's on first? A lot of nice songs by this Canadian band. "These eyes cry every night for you. These eyes have seen a lot of love but they're never gonna see another one like I had with you".
264 Electric Blue - Icehouse
A unique song that is catchy. "I just freeze every time you see through me. It's all over you, electric blue".
265 Walk Away Renee - Left Banke
A nice old song. "Just walk away Renee, you won't see me follow you back home".
266 Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lynyrd Skynyrd also performed "Sweet Home Alabama" which my brother likes. "Free Bird" tends to be requested a lot when musicians ask for requests. It has a nice combination of organ and guitar at the beginning with a lot of guitar at the end. Though it is a long song, there is something appealing about the song that probably can't be well described. "I must be traveling on now. 'Cause I'm as free as a bird now and this bird you cannot change".
267 Miracles - Jefferson Starship
This is one of those songs I heard on an album (Red Octupus) before the song was released as a single. My Grandmother Grim had a car accident when this song was on the radio. She recovered and the "Miracles" song reminded me of that. "If only you believed in miracles, so would I. I know that love is the answer, keeps holding this world together".
268 School's Out - Alice Cooper
This is a fun song reminding us of the relief of a summer break during school days. I was at a friend's place once when they had an old school desk, of no use, in their background. We threw the desk around, singing this song! "School's out for Summer. School's out forever. No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks".
269 Dogs in the Kitchen - Oliver Reimann
There is one title, "Dogs in the Kitchen", from Elton John's Captain Fantastic album in the 70's that was not set to music. The lyrics were listed in the album. Songwriters around the world set music to it with many good versions released though this one is my favorite from Oliver Reimann in Germany. "Take my advice kid and tear off the white meat and leave them the fat back at home".
270 What's New Pussycat - Tom Jones
A perky number by Tom. "You and your pussycat nose. What's new pussycat".
271 Crystal Blue Persuasion - Tommy James and the Shondells
The power of blue from this 60's classic. "The sun is arising, most definitely, a new day is coming, people are changing, ain't it beautiful, crystal blue persuasion. There'll be peace and good and brotherhood".
272 Midnight Rider - Allman Brothers
One of the earliest songs I heard as a youngster. Nice combo of melody and guitar. "I'm bound to keep on ridin'. I've got one more silver dollar but I'm not gonna let them catch the midnight rider".
273 Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
This song has one of the most popular guitar riffs (this one and "Hotel California"). Little did I know when I heard this song in the 70's that I would enjoy guitarist Ritchie Blackmore decades later with a great easy listening band called "Blackmore's Night". "Smoke on the water, fire in the sky".
274 Daniel Backwards - Elton John Backwards
Back in the 70's, I could not reverse music on records or cassettes but I could with 8 track tapes. I turned an 8 track tape of Elton John's Greatest Hits backwards. "Daniel Backwards" sounded the best, like a whole new song. With the magic of a computer, I was able to reverse Elton John songs again recently! This song even sounds like it is saying "S'il Vous Plait" at the 1:03 and 2:04 marks.
275 Someone to Watch Over Me - Mary Hopkin
Mary Hopkin sings this classic well. "To my heart he carries the key. How I need someone to watch over me".
276 Tell Me Something Good - Rufus and Chaka Khan
A unique interesting song. "Tell me something. Tell me that you love me".
277 For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton
Sheena is a talented singer. "You can see so much in me that's new. You really know me, that's all I need to know".
278 I Left My Heart in San Francisco - Tony Bennett
A classic song that can only be linked with Tony. "I'm going home to my city by the bay. I left my heart in San Francisco, high on hill, it calls to me".
279 Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim
Andy Kim was part of the creation of "The Archies" and then had a solo career in the 70's. "Beautiful is the dream that makes you mine".
280 There's No Stopping Your Heart - Marie Osmond
A nice perky song by Marie. "I thought I was dreaming with my eyes wide open. When forever starts, there's no stopping your heart".
281 Him - Rupert Holmes
A catchy and well produced song from the 70's. "Him, him, him, what's she gonna do about him".
282 Summer - War
War has some interesting songs. There is something catchy about "Cisco Kid" though "Summer" does remind you of Summer days along with interesting bongo drums. I guess the song is dated with rolling down windows (more air conditioning today), 8 tracks (unknown music media today), and CB radio (less popular today). "Riding around town with all the windows down. 8 Track playing all your favorite songs. It's Summer, my kind of year".
283 Some Kind of Wonderful - Grand Funk Railroad
A nice tribute song. "I got everything that a man could want. I got more than I could ask for. My baby, she's alright, my baby, she's clean out of sight. She's some kind of wonderful".
284 Our Love is Here to Stay - Ella Fitzgerald
A classic song by a well known singer. She used to be in the "Is it live or is it Memorex" commercials. "It's very clear our love is here to stay. The Rockies may crumble, they're only made of clay, but our love is here to stay".
285 Can't Get Enough - Bad Company
A nice uptempo song. "I can't get enough of your love. I love you so much, I can't get enough of your love".
286 Who's Behind - Don Grim at 5 Years of Age
There is a 1963 recording of me at age 5 singing this song. I don't remember the song but I obviously remembered at age 5! Maybe I learned it in Kindergarten. On an Internet search, the song is called "Who's Behind the False Face" (music by David Russel and words by Susan Rupert, Music for Young Americans, 1959 American Book Company). It seems you can supply your own words other than "False Face". My recording sounds like "towel pies" but it could be "cow path". Let me know if you want my 5 year old version on an mp3 file. "Who's behind the cow path, nobody knows but me. I won't tell you, you will have to guess. If your guess is right, I will answer yes".
287 Rocket Man - William Shatner
A "different" version of Elton John's Rocket Man in 1978. It comes across as comical maybe because nobody knows how sincere Mr. Shatner is in performing it. "All this science, I don't understand, it's a job, five days a week".
Rocket Man by Shatner is funky and weird!
That is all of my favorite songs, until you mention some songs I've forgotten!
